Twill, Felt Applique

Twill, felt applique is a type of applique decoration method along with woven label appliques and printed label appliques such as screen printed labels and sublimated labels. Twill, felt applique offers a classic, old school look in a variety of colors with one or two layers of fabric (twill or felt). You can mix or match materials to create a unique look and twill, felt applique works best for lettering and simple shapes. Twill, felt applique is not ideal for more detailed or complex logos. Applique is defined as the craft of stitching small fabric pieces onto larger pieces of fabric to make a pattern or design.

Twill, felt appliques can work with many types of custom apparel including shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, bags, hats, and caps. For headwear, simple shape twill, felt appliques are stitch applied to the hat using a running stitch tack down, while complex shapes are heat press applied. Twill, felt appliques can have a laser cut edge or distressed twill edge. The maximum size for twill, felt appliques on headwear is 2” H x 3.5” W. For distressed twill appliques, which have a frayed edge and border, the appliques or patches are heat press applied directly to the cap.

Felt is defined as a cloth or fabric made by rolling and pressing wool or another suitable textile accompanied by the application of moisture or heat. This moisture or heat causes the fibers to mat together to create a smooth surface. Twill is defined as a sturdy type of fabric that’s woven in a diagonal pattern (diagonal parallel ridges). Felt will usually have a softer finish or surface compared to twill.
